MBA without a Degree?
MBA without a Degree?
One of the most frequent questions we receive during admissions for the MBA program is ‘Can I enroll in an MBA without a degree’?
There are tons of people who have entered the workforce after completing their high school or some vocational diploma and now have grown the ranks and see the need for an MBA.
This needs comes at times to move into senior or board positions or even for use in migrating to a permanent home country.
The golden answer to whether one can seek admissions into an MBA without a first degree is a BIG YES!
Some of the most popular MBA courses will accept students who don’t have a first degree.
That comes as a surprise to many people as information on these opportunities can be hard to find. Most institutions were not keen to publicize flexible admissions arrangements. They were worried that they will receive tons of such applications and may reflect poorly on their reputation in business school surveys.
However this perception is and has changed over time.
In a recent Financial Times article, many schools today such as Wharton, University of Chicago, Columbia, London Business School, Edinburgh Business School are known to recruit students into the MBA without a first degree.
Why do they do that? There are some compelling reasons:
The diversity of background and experience of the candidates helps enrich the classroom discussions that are a core part of the MBA teaching method.
The Edinburgh Business School confirmed that Entrepreneurs, women re-entering the workforce after a career break, and people in public service enrolled in the MBA program via mature entry option and they were simply great candidates.
The Imperial College London quoted they recruited an Olympic three times gold medalist Skier who brought in a wealth of experience on how to handle stress, disciple and pressure to the class.
Schools have now realized that the experiences of these individuals is a great asset and can be channeled for the learning experience of the entire class.
Speaking from our own experience at Capital Colleges’ Glyndwr MBA (Glyndwr ranked top 100 in the Guardian 2019 ranking table), in our last MBA group, we have recruited 50% of our students who have between 10 – 30 years of management experience but have no first degree. During the interview process we noticed that these individuals were highly driven and motivated to achieve their MBAs to advance into senior and board positions. We were proved right and could see their contributions in the class discussions and presentation of real life scenarios which is such a value add to the whole group.
